What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Dr. George Tjamaloukas and Dr. Kathy Tjamaloukas of Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center help patients dealing with pain from plantar fasciitis in Land O' Lakes, FL, every day. Heel pain is a common complaint at our practice and most people will experience this pain at some point, but if heel pain is interfering with your daily activities, we can help with a comprehensive treatment plan.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain or plantar fasciitis plagues a lot of people. It is common to have some aches and pains in your feet, especially after heavy activity. So what contributes more specifically to plantar fasciitis pain?

Your plantar fascia is the thick band of muscle that runs along the base of your foot, connecting your heel bone and toes. Plantar fasciitis pain is common when you are very active or spend a lot of time on your feet at your job, and it is also a common complaint for people with flat feet.

Treating Heel Pain

We specialize in treating plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis pain is typically worse when you first wake up or stand up, and as you move around and stretch your foot out the pain lessens. Because of this, many people continue to hobble around every morning and don't come to see us for treatment.

It will take some time for plantar fascia pain to subside, and your doctor may recommend over-the-counter medications to keep you comfortable. But it is always better to start treatment for heel pain than to delay coming in and deal with potential complications. If you have never seen a podiatrist, you should bring the shoes you wear at work or most often to help the doctor with their evaluation.

Custom shoe orthotics provide extra cushion and support for your heels and can be helpful for relieving heel pain as you walk. Your podiatrist can also teach you stretching and strengthening exercises for your feet. Surgery to release the plantar fascia is less common, but it is an option for patients when pain has not improved with other treatments.
